Just a friendly hello to any and all of my deviants from the old days.  Life has mostly sidelined art outside of a few pieces for family and friends, but I continue to enjoy your works when I stop in from time to time.
It's come to my attention that several of my pieces here no longer show up.  The thumbnail's missing, or the art behind it, or what have you.  I have no idea if that's just a failure of the internets or more Deviantart policing.

Anyone who wants to see any missing art can also find it on my blog at billreid.net.  Just look in the Art subcategory.
Hello to any watchers still out there.

Having some fun with sculpture now.  Snapshots will be posted.

One of my biggest regrets in the passing of my father is the knowledge that we both left many things unsaid.  I'm attempting to motivate myself to put those things together for my own children.  I'm doing it blog fashion to keep the urgency fresh and to give people the opportunity to build on that advice.

If you have time and interest, have a look.
I've been inactive from the community for quite a while and will continue to, as I've only recently been dismissed from the hospital with acute encephalitis as a result of West Nile disease.

I did feel a need to speak to the organizational issues I have recently seen here.  I don't know any of the persons involved in this situation personally, and my only stake in the outcome are the friendships and community I have enjoyed these several years.  I do not know who's "right" and what's the proper legal action.  But let me simply offer a bit of advice and let whomever will, gather what they will from it.

At the end of the day, all a man has is his integrity.  Money is a temporary high.  Power and control can only be managed for a little while.  At the end of the day, there is a reflection in a mirror that will be your only companion.  I hope that you all will behave in such a manner that you can be proud of that man.
Happy holidays to everyone.
No response on the Journal entries.  Guess everyone is caught up or I'm just that much out of the loop here.  Gave them away on another forum.
I have 6 Gmail invites to share.  Post a reply here if interested.  First come first served, with some preferential treatment for old friends.
A rare night for a few comments.  I am held over at work watching an Exchange Server repair utility seemingly go nowhere.  In the 5th hour of the rebuild and seeking a little distraction.
Happy holidays to you all - hope the season brings many wonderful memories you carry for years to come.

For those interested:

- The kids are great.  Emma spoke her first word this weekend, which naturally was "Da-da" :)

- Our business opportunity is almost settled.  Financing is complete, downpayment is saved.  Only a few $M in debt and it will be ours completely :)

- Thanks to added study time, I'm more educationally and spiritually with it than ever.  I think I've learned more about world religions and philosophy in the past 3 months than in the past 3 years.

- I am eagerly mapping out my spring projects, centered mostly around finishing the landscaping I began last fall and building shelving/desk units for some our our underfinished closets.

And for those of you wondering about the incessant LACK of activity here, I have an embarrassing confession.  I've become a TiVo addict.  What geekiness was once sacrificed to the PC has been lost in a slew of home improvement channels, B movies and sports retrospectives.  I watch 6-8 shows every night within an hour by the benefit of FF speeds and closed captioning.  I am truly one with the clicker :)
I'm laughingly looking over my last journal and admiring the irony.

The guy who helped build my house once jokingly told me that he's working twice as hard since his retirement.  Although my situation's not quite that bad, it seems it's harder to leave here completely than I expected.

So I'm amending my farewell.  The rumors of my departure were evidently exaggerated :)

I don't intend to contribute heavily with art - I'm focused elsewhere right now.  But I'm still dropping in to comment every week or so.  It's just not going to be the daily affair it was before.
A year and a half ago I found my way here courtesy of Deskmod and became hooked.  Many good people came into my life as a result of this place, many good feelings were shared.  It's renewed a lot of my optimism for mankind in general, seeing the sort of support and encouragement offered freely between strangers.  It's taken my skills to a point beyond.  It's gained me a number of contract jobs that got my noodling out there in the real world - exposure I'd never have had without this association. It's been a source of encouragement, amusement and general obsession.

But I'm leaving with the memories now.

Two small children are in the house that can use all the supportive attention, education and love I can churn out.  A wonderful wife and extended family are there in need of the crumbs.  We are starting a business that will likely put the final knot in our financial outlook, and that's going to be a big investment for us all. There's a town and community out there I've been divorced from for a while that I need to reinvest myself in.  There are great friends I've lost touch with that I need in my life. And selfishly, I feel a real need to reintroduce myself to a lot of activities that I've allowed to fall away during this art interest - my music, my furniture craft, gardening, basketball, etc.  And I just need to get out and breathe in the great wide open a bit more again.

Many thanks to those of you who served as such a major source of encouragement and amusement over the long haul:

- pewxi
- spunj13 & art-raven
- bookdiva
- zetab
- cassuslebna
- wuju
- mach5
- belletrist
- mygrane
- the entire Terragen list: stotty, billybollocks, merlin-tbd, lord-zany, velociraptor, tigaer, bainy, etc...
- everyone that left a comment or shout or watched me for any length of time...

I'm likely to still drop in on occasion to peruse the wonderful things you've been making and maybe drop an encouraging word once in a while.  This stuff is just too good to ignore.

But in the interest of family, friends and Real Life, it's time to unplug for a while.  Not trying to make a [stifles tear] big dramatic scene here with this announcement; I just want everyone I've been regularly involved with to understand that you're still fantastic - I just have to be somewhere else for a while.

Friends, it's been a priviledge.

New baby is expected 7/11, so I'll be seriously out of pocket for a few days around then.  Anxiously waiting to see how much I remember about parenting newborns...

I'm sad to say I've given up my geek pedigree.  If you noticed my post about losing my old machine to an antivirus app, I became in the market for a new system.  After 15+ years of building PCs, I decided it was too much trouble and bought my first off the shelf box, a nondescript Sony from Best Buy.  Only upgrades were an additional hard drive, sound card and RAM chip.  I'm feeling old.

I recently finished a new app I coded to fill out a gap in my desktop setup - it's a horizontally scrolling wallpaper changer that's designed to fit into an "arranged" desktop/system monitor, etc.  It's configured via an INI file and will fit into desktop setups pretty well.  It's at www.simtel.net/pub/pd/64614.sh… if you're interested.

Enjoy the day.
Just a bit of warning that I'll be out of pocket for the next few weeks.

#1 reason is that I'm expecting my second child in just about three weeks.  Anyone interested in being on my "upon delivery" mailing, feel free to let me know.  We are expecting a girl, to be named Emma Grace.

#2 is that a relatively benign virus hit my main compy and my antivirus went completely ballistic, over-innoculated and basically hosed up every EXE I regularly use - art tools, music tools, web tools, you name it.  It's just a process of reinstallation, but I'm going to take the opportunity to do some junk cleaning and possibly upgrade some of my apps/OS since it all needs fixing.  In the case of my dev tools, that means installing Vis Studio 5 (for Crystal Reports control), then installing 6 over it all all the subsequent service packs.  I always have trouble with it. And in the case of Poser, you can't just re-copy your content directory over - it will have to be installed piece by piece.  Meaning several hundred zip files to unpack, arrange and copy over and a newfound appreciation for Renderosity.  Meaning I may need to look into poetry again for a while :)

I'm also considering moving my elephantine desktop setup to a laptop based one, since I need to be a lot more portable these days.  I'm somewhat concerned about being able to do art well on one.  If anyone has experience using a laptop for digi painting and manips and stuff, I'd love to know what you think about it.

After several years I upgraded my hardware at work.  I'm staring down a new LCD Imac, tricked out Dell desktop and laptop with the works, new Palm and new Laserjet.

Hail to the king, baby.
